Ferdinand Magellan, Portuguese Fernão de Magalhães, pronunciation: [fɨr'nãu̯ dɨ mɐɣɐ'ʎãi̯ʃ], Spanish Fernando de Magallanes (Born 3rd February 1480 in Sabrosa, Portugal; died 27th Aprtil 1521 on Mactan, The Philippenes) was a Portuguese seafarer, who sailed on behalf of the Spanish crown. Magellan began the first circumnavigation of the world, but was killed during the journey. The story of his journey is made famous by the notes of Antonio Pigafetta who also took part.
