19th century, Maastricht, The Netherlands
1. Regout made, since the middle of the 19th century, several formats of the so-called ‘Amazone’ plates, made of under glazed blue earthenware, renowned with collectors. The diameters of approx. 20.5, 24.5 and 31 cm are still found quite easily and are therefore not rare. The largest size offered here (approx. 34.5 cm, format no. 12) however, was only made in small quantities and is very rare. The plate is named after the female horse rider on the foreground of the depiction, which is that of a typical English castle landscape. The edge is abundantly decorated with a flower motif. Typical is the deep blue under glaze, which was also used for the factory logo on the back of the edge: ‘P.R.’ ‘PRIZE MEDAL 1851’. ‘AMAZONE’. The plate is blind marked on the reverse with an oval with the text: ‘P. REGOUT’. ‘12 MAASTRICHT’. In intact condition. Clear signs of the firing process on the reverse, the typical characteristic of the early Regout production.
2. Regout also made earthenware tableware with maritime motifs since 1893. The ships, anchors, though also the trees with opulent leaves were printed in under glaze blue on white fond. The plate offered here is the largest version, with a diameter of approx. 34 cm (format no. 11). Blind marked on the reverse with ‘F11’ and marked in the blue under glaze with ‘MARINES’. In immaculate condition.
