Pope Pius IX (in Latin: Pius PP. IX, born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti; Senigallia, 13 May 1792 – 7 February 1878) was the 255th Bishop of Rome and Pope of the Catholic Church, the 163rd and last ruler of the Papal States, from 1846 to 1870.
The Papal States, also known as State of the Church (the latter is the official name until 1815) or Ecclesiastical State, was the entity composed of territories on which the Holy See exerted temporal power from 756 to 1870, more than a thousand years.
Its prestige and influence on the European political theatre saw periods of importance during the millennium of its existence; its international prominence came out of the territorial limits that the historical circumstances had given it in the framework of the Holy Roman Empire, between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age.
The Papal States ended its existence in 1870.
