In real life!
In 1947, the series Re 4/4 ushered in a new era and this new generation of locomotives appeared on the Swiss railways. With the commissioning of the Re 4/4 Series, the Swiss Federal Railways changed their entire concept of rail transport. This locomotive that operated on turning bogies and without driveshafts and had a top speed of 125 km/h, allowed far shorter travel times. Until today they represent a milestone in the history of Swiss locomotive construction. With it’s total mass of 57 tons this sturdy machine it is noticeably lighter. This ushered out the era of slow and heavy intercity travel and introduced high speed intercity connections and a new time for the SBB rail travel. These powerful and versatile engines - 1855kw (2520 horsepower) were used in commuter, as well as multiple roles where their traction power was well suited to the new traction requirements. Their great acceleration capabilities as well as the electrical resistance braking systems were well suited for use with the SBB-Leichstahl carriages. These then represented for some considerable time the passenger rail services of Swiss local rail travel.
