The old lady’s three-in-the pan’ buckwheat pancake are being admired by a small crowd of hungry children. In these years Rembrandt made many a study of life in the streets of Amsterdam. Pancake woman were popular subjects for genre scenes in the early 17th century. We find them in the works of such artists as Jan van de Velde, Willem Buytewech, Gerard Dou and Gabriel Metsu. The earliest known treatment of this theme is found in the works of the Flemish painter Adriaen Brouwer, who was probably Rembrandt’s direct inspiration.
