1955, the Netherlands

Blue and white damask breakfast tablecloth with 4 napkins, designed in 1955 by Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972)
Measurements 210 x 150 cm (breakfast tablecloth) and with 4 napkins, measurements 40 x 40 cm (napkins).

The damask tablecloth is stainless, has only been used a few times and has been washed. The napkins are unused.

The breakfast tablecloth was woven by Van Dissel & Zonen in Eindhoven ca. 1955.  After weaving company Van Dissel had given the linen industry a fresh impulse after World War 2, Escher was commissioned to design table linen.

Escher only made one design for table damask, with fish and sea horses.  The tablecloth was produced in three different colours, of which this blue-white variant was one.

and 'Dossier Damast' in the FD - Het Financieele Dagblad (November 2015).
