Nayarit, shaft-tomb culture, West-Mexico, protoclassic, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE.
A lovely seated female terracotta figure (Nayarit, San Sebastián style). Made of eartenware, painted with reddish brown slip and burnished with remains of a negative resist pattern. Hollow, with vent-hole on top of the head.
Characteristically elongated visage and incised coiffure. Her face shows sophisticated contours, a prominent nose, incised eyes and open mouth. She has a child under the left arm and is elaborately adorned with a white painted hairband, double-strand necklace, large ear ornaments and body painting or tattoos.
Made for funerary purposes only, figurines like these were considered tomb guardians and the link between the deceased and the afterworld.
Condition: Good and stable. Wear and erosion commensurate to age. Minor chips and scratches overall. Small aged planes of fracture (child's head lost); deposits (lime), incrustations and manganese oxidations; aged patina; no apparent cracks.
Provenance: Ex-private Hooper Collection, California. Ex-ArtemisGallery. The certificate of authenticity issued by the latter will be provided in pdf.
