Mochica Culture, Northern Peru, ca. 100 to 800 CE.
A nicely detailed Mochica stirrup vessel, depicting a male gatherer dressed in a cape over a huipil and adorned with a headdress and large earspools. He presents a branch with multiple pods (cocoa ?) and carries a bag on his left shouder with the decorated string around his neck.
Mould made of light brownware, unequally burnished (rusty brown) and slip painted in different hues (beige and sandy). Faded facial tattoos.
Condition : Choice. Expected surface wear and erosion commensurate to age. Minor chips, scuffs and scratches overall. Aged planes of fracture (spout, right ear, left foot/toes). Little hole near left hand. Stable hairline crack diagonally over the belly. Some lime incrustations and minute manganese oxidation points. Aged patina.
In private collection for decades. Acquired late 60s. By family descent.
