Reinier Pijnenburg (Vught 1884 - 's-Hertogenbosch 1968).
Reinier Pijnenburg was initially taught by Frans Kops and Piet Slager. At the age of twenty, he worked in the studio of Amsterdam painter Jan Dunselman for some time. After that, he completed his education at the Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Antwerp and moved to Paris. There, he copied the old masters in the Louvre but mostly he developed an impressionistic style.
From 1915 to 1920, he lived in Spain. There, he noticed ordinary people’s daily life, whom he portrayed in their traditional clothing.
He returned to Vught in 1920. After his Spanish work, he dedicated himself to capturing what he regarded as typically Brabant subjects: farmers, the Guild life, farms and interiors. He created many paintings about that. The quality of them changes.
His best works are however very admirable and often also have some documentary value as registrations of a now as good as disappeared village life.
He also went looking for folkloric traditions outside of Brabant, for example in Brittany, Morocco and in colourful Dutch towns like Volendam, Marken and Staphorst.
In addition to folkloric paintings, Pijnenburg also painted still lifes. In the oldest copies, it is obvious that he learned a lot from copying in the Louvre. Later, his technique in this genre becomes more impressionistic.
