Jan Theuns (1877-1961) lived and worked in Breda. He attended the Ambachtschool and the Avondtekenschool in Breda, and was subsequently taught by G.W.M. van der Heijden. He initially worked as a house and decoration painter, but would later increasingly devote himself to the art of painting. He painted and drew portraits, farm interiors with figures, landscapes, cityscapes and still lifes. He later became known for the very skilful copies he made after Rembrandt's work.
This lot contains a view on a fairground from 1930 in Breda (with the St. Laurentiuskerk in the background) that originates from a private collection. This large-sized work depicts the guests and funfair (personnel) in great detail. It is a colourful work with many beautiful portrayals of the various attractions. The shadings in this work make it particularly joyous to look at.
