The Saturnalia were great Roman holidays during the winter solstice (17 to 24 December, then 25); the celebrations of the Saturn God were accompanied by great unbridled popular festivals, but also shows, including gladiators. Social barriers were repealed and the slaves were served by masters. Just Lipse brings together all the comments that have been written on the subject and studies them. A large part is dedicated to different performances by the gladiators.

Iustus Lipsius or in French Justus Lipsius, his original name, Joost Lips, born in Overijse (Duchy of Brabant) October 18, 1547 and died in Leuven March 23, 1606, is a philologist and humanist who lived in what was then the Spanish Netherlands, today Belgium. He attempted, in the composition of his trial of Constantia, to promote a renewed Christian stoicism of the ancient Stoicism. There, he had to influence many of his contemporaries, giving birth to the current of the Neo-stoicisme. He taught at the universities of Jena, Leiden and Leuven.

His ideas about the ideal citizen, as responsible individual, whose behavior is dictated by the reason which remains in control of his emotions, and is willing to fight for the service of the city, had many followers in troubled reform times. The ideal citizen of Justus Lipsius, converted to politics, translates concretely a rationalisation of the state and its executive bodies, an authoritarian government of the prince, the education of citizens in the discipline, and a significant militarisation of society. These principles are the basis of the concept of modern state, as it developed in the Republic of the United Provinces.

Rare book of this important treatise on gladiatorial combats and the on amphitheaters and coliseums.
