Le Paris d'Eugène Atget - Collection Yvan Christ
Superbly printed in rotogravure. Limited edition of 600 nominative copies. Book never marketed.
‘Eugène Atget worked for painters in his neighbourhood or, to which he provided documents for artists such as Foujita, Kisling, Vlaminck, Utrillo, Braque, Derain, Dunoyer de Segonzac or detailed. He was also photographer-archaeologist', says Yvan Christ.
In this second role, his customers were no other than large public libraries of Paris, starting with the national library. Among his regular buyers was the American artist Man RAY (1890-1976), who, in the wake of the first world war began, with his Rayograms, to engage in so-called abstract photography experiences. He has the merit of having discerned as first the plastic and poetic work of Atget, whose users were only holding documentary and 'picturesque ' value.
Belatedly, the cubists, surrealists and dadaists claimed him and made him a great man on their side. In 1926, with Man Ray, the surrealist revolution publishes some of its most puzzling images. A year later, Eugène Atget died.
