As a plasterer’s son from Schiedam, Poortvliet did not seem destined for a life as an artist. His parents were strictly reformed and did not at all like the idea of their oldest son going to an art school.

His talent for drawing manifested in Poortvliet’s youth. After primary school, the young Poortvliet worked at an advertising agency. After he had fulfilled the military service in the navy, he climbed up to a senior manager position at the advertising agency of Unilever.

Poortvliet had more fun with his secondary activities for various publishing houses. He illustrated books by Jaap ter Haar, Leonard Roggeveen and Godfried Bomans among others. He was a passionate Hunter and started drawing nature themes.

In the late 1960s, Poortvliet was at a point where he could quit his job and establish himself as an independent illustrator. He did not have enough work and in order to make a living, he proposed a book along with home-made drawings and watercolours from his hunting experiences. Later he also made such a work about the life of Jesus of Nazareth.

Poortvliet saw himself as a drawing storyteller. His drawings were the story. At most, he wrote a short caption as an explanation.

He was published for years by Kok ten Have (Kampen) and Van Holkema and Warendorf in Bussum, where his life and works about the gnome (co-author Wil Huygen) had 61 editions. With the gnome series Poortvliet acquired international fame. This series is a whole life of its own and was also filmed as cartoon in 1985.
