Former student of the English college of St. Omer, run by the Jesuits, Pierre-Antoine de La Place (1707-1793), a reformed religion was a fruitful wegg, too some will say, who became known as one of the first translators of Shakespeare and other Elizabethan authors in French. He lived in Paris in a small circle of epicureans more or less atheist: Boindin, Boismorand, Caylus, Crébillon, Piron, Duclos ; and he was a member of several ‘banter’ societies including the Dominicans. This compilation constitutes more a collection of ana than a periodical or a scientific collection per se. We find however the way to challenge he who was director of mercury and the new choice: abundance of historical and literary anecdotes, translations from English, verses and epitaphs, unpublished letters (drawn from the archives of Duclos for volume I, then of the correspondence from mercury). As in the Nouveau Choix, the loans from Prévost are numerous.
