Gabriele Minelli

Special folding top hat called Gibus, also known as “chapeau claque”. Invented by the homonymous Antoine Gibus in the 1823 France, this type of hat contains very thin steel springs that allow him to get back into shape, with the stress on the brim, after being vertically compressed. This allows the wearer to flatten the hat and to carry it under the arm of store it in small places.
The nickname “chapeau claque” comes from the noise produced by the click of the springs.
The hat presented at auction can be dated back to the 1920s. It is made of black silk, with a fine black fabric lining, presumably reps, also marked internally as “Marke Elefant”. It shows signs of wear due to the ageing, the use and storage, but it is intact. Perfectly working mechanism (see the pictures). Original green cardboard hatbox branded “Spezial-Geschaft fur Hute C.E.Nicolai”, with transport handle.
