Beach view at La Pointe St Gildas, Watercolour, 47 x 68 cm by H. Lebasque 1865-1937. Lebasque studied at the Academy in Angers, in 1886 in Paris, became a pupil of Léon Bonnat. In the 1890s, he met the Impressionists Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac and Georges Seurat, whom would have great influence on him, especially on his use of colour and light. He had contact with the painters of the Groupe de Lagny, from whom he got his Post-Impressionist style. In 1896, he exhibited for the first time in the Paris salon. Together with his friend Henri Matisse, he belonged to the founders of Salon d'Automne in 1903. Lebasque could be found at the Montmartre, and travelled to the Vendée, Normandy and Brittany. He worked on the French Riviera, in places like Saint-Tropez, along with fellow artists like Pierre Bonnard and Henri Manguin. From this period there are beautiful beach views. In 1924 he finally settled in the artists’ town of Le Cannet. Lebasque's Work is displayed in the Musée d'Orsay and the Petit Palais in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes and the Fine Arts Museum in Rijsel.
