In good and ready-to-use condition with signs of use
This very richly decorated top desk is made from oak & mahogany and glued with (flower) mahogany veneer, during the late Dutch Louis XV period about 1770-1780. The entire design of the furniture is fully Louis XV, but the symmetry and the decoration in the carving & frame and the fittings already mark the new fashion of the Louis XVI period. The (very short) transitional period where both styles come together is also called the Transtion period.
The top desk is built up of three separate segments. The top unit has a curved hood with refined carved profile frames, and there is an ornament with bow in the crest, canvas festoons and leaf motifs. The original mirrors in the doors are framed with a profile frame identical to the hood. The carved door needle has a twisted ribbon motif. The doors still have their original key entrances including with ram’s heads, pearl frames, different motifs and portrait medallions. The lock is also original, but a working key is missing.
Behind the doors there are three drawers and three adjustable shelves. The bottom of the top unit has a border that is fully decorated with double fluting. The writing section has a flat flap with original lock and working key.
The interior consists of six drawers with several boxwood bands and original brass knobs. A centrally placed door with marquetery of a classic vase with flowers, with behind it another drawer. The door is flanked by two secret compartments with boxwood front, flat ebony column and refined gilded brass capitals and bases. On the left and right top side there are two more smaller drawers and the interior also has a secret lockable bottom part.
In the "strong” mahogany profile frame at the top of the writing section there still are two extendable shelves on which candlesticks were placed. Under the flap there are two drawers in which the candles were kept and on which the flap rests when opened. These still have their original round ring fittings decorated with a pearl edge.
The curved bottom unit has three smoothly-running drawers glued with finely drawn flower mahogany veneer, with around the front a half-round frame. The drawers still have their original locks, but a working key is missing. The brass entrances and handles are decorated with refined ram’s heads, garlands, classical vases, pearl frames and canvas festoons. The bolt and the diagonal knees have carving with different leaf motifs. At the front the top desk rests on elegant claw legs.
The top desk has a deep warm colour and beautiful silky shine, is in a good condition and ready to use with the expected signs of use, but could do with some attention/restoration here and there. All over the furniture, especially the base unit, veneer has come undone and/or is damaged. Furthermore there are slightly smaller and not (directly) disturbing damage/signs of wear that could be touched up.
