In good restored condition

A late 18th/early 19th century relatively large mahogany tea box made during the Dutch transitional period of Louis XVI to Empire, known as the Directoire period circa 1795-1810. One of the style typical features of this short period is the "diamond pattern", which in this case is inlaid into the tea box several times. The tea chest is made of oak wood, glued with mahogany veneer and has boxwood edges. Both the top and the front are inlaid with a diamond pattern, made up of patterns of several contrasting types of wood. In the middle of the diamonds, there is an oval marquetry of a shell with a green background and boxwood band. In order to give the shell more depth and contrast, all different (very small) parts are burned/singed in warm sand. Both key locks are also made up as an inlaid diamond motif of two different types of wood. At the front, there is a dovetailed drawer that is glued with the original red paper on the inside. This drawer most likely served for storing the silver spoons and the sugar tongs. The inside of the lid is also inlaid with refined band work and a diamond pattern in various contrasting wood types. The wood on the inside has never been exposed to uv/sunlight and therefore still has the intense warm contrasting colours as it had 200 years ago! The inside still has its solid mahogany frame in which previously three bottles for two different types of tea and sugar were kept. The woodwork below the frame is glued with its original red paper, just like the drawer. The tea caddy still has its original fittings - brass hinges, refined handles and locks with working keys. To the right side, at the lower left there is a restoration to the veneer, which has been well executed and is not disturbing. The bottom of the tea box is fitted with a mahogany (veneer) framework and a dark green fabric. The tea box has a wonderful warm orange-brown colour and a beautiful patina, that looks even more beautiful because of the glossy shine of the original wax finish!
