Killims are usually found in the Near East, particularly in Iran. Certain regions such as Shiraz, Kurdistan and Baluchestan are renowned for their creations. Up until very recently, kilims were not made for commercial consumption and so preserved their authenticity for domestic use. They represent at once the memory and identity of the sedentary, nomad and semi-nomad peoples who weave them. Each tribe and each village has its own style. Kilim patterns are geometric and inspired by the nomadic life and their beliefs, the tones are ethnic and the texture is fine.
Originally, the kilim was used as a covering and for protection from the floor of mosques or nomad tents. These days, one can use them on the ground, on the walls, thrown over a couch, on a headboard or as drapes.
