Władysław Pawelec (1923-2004) was a photographer who lived and worked in Warsaw. He was a member of the Union of Polish art photographers (ZPAF) from 1966. As a pioneer of Polish erotic photography he photographed female portraits and nudes for more than 30 years. His shows from the 1970s, starting with the famous Monica (1974) and a nude calendar from 1983 published in 200,000 copies, were sensational; they inflicted a revaluation of the critical perception of nude photography and attracted international attention. In 1985, his photo book ‘Friends of Zofia’ was published by Melrose Square Publishing. In 1999 ‘Fotografia aktu’ [Nude photography] was published and in 2000 public television, Telewizja Polska, made a documentary about Pawelec, ‘Portret artysty z nimfami w tle’ [Portrait of an artist with nymphs].
He participated in numerous exhibitions. Including World Press Photo in The Hague (1966) and APA International Exhibition of Photography in Tokyo (1978). In 1984 he had a solo exhibition at the Canon Photo Gallery in Amsterdam.
