Umbilical stork scissors in 800/1000 silver, 19th century, weight 40 g, length 13 cm
These nice stork scissors were used to clamp (and not to cut) the umbilical cord of the newborn before proceeding to ligation and cutting; they could also be used to staple the medicated cotton for the hygiene of the umbilicus. In any case, they were lovingly preserved as an auspicious amulet for the newborn, to be donated later to remember the birth.
Entirely made in 800 silver; they are very sought after and date back to the second half of the 19th century; they are French and characterized by the Aesculapian snake wrapping around the neck and by a frog-leg shaped support base.
