The company was based by Charles Cheers Wakefield in 1899 as CC Wakefield & Company London. At the beginning of the 20th century, the company started to produce castor oil under the name Castrol. The name came from the English castor oil name.
In 1960, the name of the company was changed to Castrol, while in 1966 Castrol was bought by the Scottish oil company Burmah Oil. Since 2000, Burmah Oil, along with Castrol, is part of BP.
