The locomotives of the series BB 7200 are derived from the prototype BB 7003 and are built by the firm Alstom commissioned by the SNCF The BB 7200 was the first French DC locomotive with automatic load control The buckled nose is designed by Paul Arzens and applied to various French construction series and also on the Dutch NS 1600/1800/1700 series
Some of the locomotives of the BB 7200 series were used for the transport of goods and were admitted for a maximum speed of 100 km/h The other locomotives were used for passenger transport and were admitted for a maximum speed of 160 km/h in Southwest France
With the split of the SNCF in 1999 the BB 7200 locomotives were spread over the VFE (Voyages France Europe), the Corail Intercités (CIC), the Transport Express Régional (TER) and the SNCF FRET.
