Five inset silvered medallions with Christ’s way of the cross, in good condition
A fabulous old Italian micro mosaic crucifix, large and impressive and in wonderful condition!
A splendid example of the tourist trade micro mosaics of the turn of the century, 1900, give or take, when Grand Tour travel was in its own “Belle Epoche” and artisans souvenir pieces such as this found their way home with the wealthy fortunate few who traveled the world collecting them. This crucifix is entirely worked into a heavy nickel (or nickel plated) framework, assuring the long life to the full installation of tiny bits of colored glass tesserae with which it is worked. Lovely with colorful flowers in a turquoise mosaic, also implements within the mosaic including a pigeon (Holy Spirit, Peace), ears of corn (the hope of a life after death ), bunch of grapes (the Eucharist or the Lord's Supper and with it the sacrificial death of Christ), chalice with host (personification of the body of Christ), flowers with the text: Rome
Five souvenir style silvered medallions at each of the four points of the cross and the largest in the center all with images of Christ's way of the cross.
Very good condition. Some age darkening to the silvered medallions and there are some tiny tarnish or corrosion spots to the surface of the nickel cross framework. Some missing glass tesserae /glass tiles (I noticed five the moment).
11.2” (28.5 cm.) tall (not counting hang ring) and 7.9” (20 cm.) wide.
