An antique Pema Raka carnelian bead, coming from China-Tibet, known in Hymalaya and Mongolia. The weathering and the wear signs around the holes suggest a very old age and a continuous use.
Very good condition for the age, excellent patina and dig marks where a portion of the bead has been scraped or shaved away to be mixed into medicine.
"Pema Raka" is the Tibetan name and originates from the sanskrit words "Padma" (meaning Lotus flower) and "Rakta" (meaning red or blood), so the translation sounds like "blood lotus" or "red lotus". Nan hong means "red from south" in chinese.
These beads range from orange to deep red in colour, depending on iron's inclusions in chalcedony. They might also display crystalline banding. this one presents very light white inclusions.
