Good overall condition - 59 cm
Bust of "Cosme I de Medici", after the model by the famous sculptor Benvenuto Cellini (1500-1571).
Italian school of the 19th century.
Dimensions: 59 x 30 x 17 cm
The sculpture depicts a portrait of Cosme I de Medici, Duke of Florence between 1537-1569, period in which he commissioned the famous Florentine goldsmith Benvenuto Cellini to make this large bust in bronze. The Duke is depicted wearing an ornamented military outfit with triumphal connotations and with a terrible and authoritative expression. The genre is undoubtedly of imperial Rome origin. Its original place of location was on the gate of the fortress of Cosme I in Portoferraio, and was intended to instill respect and fear to the potential invaders of the Duchy of Florence, very disputed by the Spanish monarchy, and England, France, and Austria.
This piece in question is a faithful reproduction in the finest details, but with smaller dimensions than the original in Florence.
