The Staub family was a centuries-old dynasty of watchmakers from Karlsruhe. One of the family, Hermann Staub, moved to Pforzheim in 1897, where he started a jewellery factory with a partner, Schmidt. Schmidt & Staub.
The company flourished and in 1907 they were commissioned to design and make a tiara for the Grand Duchess Hilde of Baden. Following this, they were allowed to call themselves purveyor and they received many assignments from other aristocratic families.
