This vintage calculator, full of charm and nostalgic flavour, is a Nova - Brunsviga model II manufactured in Germany between 1925 and 1934. This model came during the aforementioned years, becoming very popular. The calculator shows a compact and solid design, very attractive and in good condition. This machine works perfectly, and is capable of performing arithmetic operations with the same speed and precision than when it was originally manufactured. In this way, it is a functional and decorative piece that will delight collectors of vintage calculators.
The Brunsviga brand is a landmark in the history of calculators of the 20th century. It is based, like many others of the period, in the system of windlass invented by Odhner. For its production and marketing, the German company Grimme, Natalis & Co. from Braunschweig acquired the patent rights of the Odhner calculator in 1892 and marketed its own machines under the name “Brunsviga” (which means Braunschweig in Latin). The new company acquired the name Brunsviga Maschinenwerke AG in 1927, and in 1959 merged with another famous company manufacturer of calculating machines: the Olympia Werke AG from Wilhelmshaven.
This calculator in particular is the Nova-Brunsviga II model, and its serial number is 109976. This number and the model are recorded on the front of the machine, in the lower left corner. At the other end, in the right corner we see engraved the name of the company that produced the model: Grimme, Natalis & Co. To the left of the levers with numbers we can see the calculator’s name NOVA-BRUNSVIGA and the name and the company’s logo: a monogram with the initials N and G, inscribed in a circle and a star. In the back of the machine we find again its name engraved in white letters.
