When in 1981 in Poland, the free trade union Solidarność with the President Lech Wałęsa started to grow quickly and the political climate slowly started to open up, Ryszard Waśko organised Construction in Process in Łodź, the largest exhibition of contemporary, Polish and international art in Poland. He invited artists such as Richard Serra, Sol LeWitt, Brian O' Doherty, Dennis Oppenheim, Lawrence Weiner and Richard Nonas, who, in turn, accepted the invitation. A symbolic alternative was started for other, more popular art events. Construction in Process has become a worldwide network of art centres and took place in 1981 in Łodź, 1985 in Munich, 1989 in Łodź, in 1993 in Łodź, in 1995 in Israel, in 1998 in Melbourne and 2000 in Bydgoszcz.
Waśko organized the Biennial of Łodź, which took place in 2004 for the first time. Janusz Głowacki is the director and the artistic director of the Polish section is Aneta Szyłak, while Emmett Williams, co-founder of the Fluxus Movement, is responsible for the international section.
The International Artists' Museum (IAM) in Łodź was founded in 1989, with Emmett Williams as President, by Ryszard Waśko.
