I believe it has never been touched
Sublime sculpture depicting the Virgin of the Apocalypse who crushes the serpent and the crescent moon.
Sicily, second half of the 17th century / early 18th century.
Papier-mâché sculpture with core in composite material, resting on a stump of linden wood. It is entirely and skilfully hand painted with the fine art of that period, with an enveloping pose and clothes that have a movement characterised by sumptuous harmony.
The expressive eyes of the Virgin are made of glass, as well as those of the dragon.
This sculpture of the Madonna can be distinguished from the others for its beautiful vintage patina (I suggest you not to touch it because it gives charm and is really amazing) and also for the pathos of its ecstasy. The expression is very full of charm for those who admire it. The eyes are turned to God and Heaven, in an ecstatic expression that only a great work like this can offer.
Beautiful proportions, some small missing pieces easy to reconstruct (look carefully at the photos), due to the age and originality of the work, not corrupted with false restorations.
Size: height 80 cm, mantle width 35 cm, base width 26 cm.
