2nd half 20th century, Germany

A Karlsruhe ceramic plaque of the German knight Götz von Berlichingen / Gottfried von Berlichingen.
31 x 23 x 2cm.
Made by the Staatliche Manufaktur Majolika AG Karlsruhe company of Germany.

Hard, thick ceramic plate. A hand-wobbled copy of medieval majolica - a painting from 1547. Condition: very good.

The board has a small loss on the lower left corner.

Götz von Berlichingen, actually Gottfried von Berlichingen (born in 1480 in Württemberg, died in 1562 in Hornberg, Germany) - the German knight was an example of fidelity to the princes and loyalty to the word. He was a man of honor, devoted to his ruler for life.

At the age of 16, Götz von Berlichingen joined the service of Margrave Frederick II - the ruler of Brandenburg-Ansbach. A year later (in 1497) he participated in the expedition of Emperor Maximilian I, fighting in Lorraine, Brabant and Burgundy. In 1499 he hardly saved his life in a lost war with Switzerland. Like Georg von Frundsberg, he was disappointed with the military strategy adopted by Emperor Maximilian I.
In 1519 he fought alongside Ulrich Wirtemberski with the army of the Swabian Union.
Founded in 1901.
Majolica ceramics factory is the cultural lighthouse of the city of fans. The traditional, highly acclaimed artistic workshops of the former residence in Baden were founded in 1901 by the Grand Duke Friedrich I. The artistic initiators were Hans Thoma and Wilhelm Süs. In its more than 110-year history, "majolica" had the most brilliant times. Their unique products with an unforgettable quality mark (the Baden coat of arms with the Grand Ducal crown and the double M) were sought after and valued around the world soon after they were founded. At the World Trade Fair in 1904. At St. Louis (USA) majolica received a gold medal for her work.
