Arie Zuidersma was born in Emmen in 1925. He may be labelled as self-taught artist. Because he was only registered for one year at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. In 1968 Arie Zuidersma was invited as a guest to participate in the exhibitions of the Groninger art circle "De Ploeg". He had already built a name for himself. Important for his development as a painter was Marten Klompien. Almost daily, the two of them rode around by bike to paint in nature. His membership of "The Ploeg" only lasted ten years. In 1978 he turned his back on them because he was disappointed about the fact that some members kept exhibiting old work over and over again.
His work is labelled as abstract/expressionist, but Zuidersma himself only took this as just a name, nothing more. The feelings that are at the foundation of the creative process, cannot be captured in words, he said. Critics especially praise his use of colour. As a yardstick he would asked himself if he would want to ‘step into’ his painting. “Dan weet ik dat het goed is” (Then I know that it is good).
