1895, Geldermalsen, the Netherlands.
Unique documented plaster relief portrait by the famous sculptor Joseph Mendes da Costa, dated 1895 above the monogram.
Pictured is the Innkeeper, Johanna Hendrika van Aken-van Mourik from Geldermalsen where the artist spent much of his youth. The portrait is probably made as a thank you or payment. In the Netherlands Institute for Art History a photograph is preserved of this portrait, it is also included in the standard work “De kunst van (the art of) J.Mendes da Costa" L. Tilanus (see photos). Tilanus (see images).
This is the first portrait that has ever been made by the artist, so one of his earliest known pieces.
The relief was once broken and repaired, you can see this at the back. This is well glued and padded, but at the back this was levelled off with plaster, causing the signature and date to disappear, because there were two types of plaster on top of each other, it started to come off causing the original signature with date to become visible again. This also explains the still present residual plaster. Can be hung on a metal hook.
Has not previously been in the market, from private collection!
Length 25 cm.
The piece can be viewed by appointment after intervention by the auctioneer.
