About Gijs van der Sluis:
The autodidact, modernistic designer was mostly active during the 1950s and 1960s and is known for his contemporary and functional designs, including chairs, tables, sofas and chaise longues.
In 1946, Van der Sluis and his brother established 'Van der Sluis Stalen Meubelen' in Culemborg. Van der Sluis had a technical degree and due Van der Sluis' design genius the company grew exponentially from 1950 to 1990.
Besides doing design work for his own company, Van der Sluis also designed furniture for Gispen and 't Spectrum. His most famous work is without a doubt the 540 Sofa for Gispen (1961). His lounge chairs, such as the Model 30 and Model 36 (both 1960s), often had plush seats in combination with chromed or black metal frames and floating wooden armrests. Model 30 Lounge Chair shows Van der Sluis' preference for combining sleek lines and minimalist design.
Although Van der Sluis Stalen Meubelen (nowadays better known as Vandersluis) still exists, Van der Sluis' vintage furniture - especially its sofa beds and armchairs - is more sold on vintage markets these days.
