Original woodblock print by Toyohara Chikanobu (1838-1912) - 'The courtesan Oiso no Tora', from the series "Embroidery Pictures, Comparison of the Day and the Night" - Japan - 1886
The courtesan Oiso no Tora was the lover of Soga Juro Sukenari, who together with his brother sought revenge on Kudo Suketsune. Suketsune had murdered their father and for many years the Soga brothers plotted their retribution. However, Juro was assassinated during an ambush to Suketsune, at the foot of Mount Fuji. Greatly anguished, Oiso no Tora wandered through the country, praying for the rest of the spirit of Juro.
The woodblock print is taken from the series "Embroidery Pictures, Comparison of the Day and the Night", made in 1886 by Toyohara Chikanobu).
The work on Japanese washi paper, printed by the publisher Kobayashi Tetsujiro, is in very good condition.
