Original kuchi-e woodblock print by Kobori Tomoto (1864-1931) - Departing for the Battle - Japan - 1908
Rare kuchi-e woodblock print made in 1908 by Kobori Tomoto, entitled "Departing for the Battle" and depicting a female samurai, the famous Tomoe Gozen, intent on getting ready before going down to the battlefield.
Tomoe, a fighter serving the shogun Minamoto no Yoshinaka, is one of the most valiant warriors described in the epic literature of the samurai tradition. «Whenever a battle was imminent, Yoshinaka sent her out as his first captain, equipped with strong armor, an oversized sword, and a mighty bow; and she performed more deeds of valor than any of his other warriors» (J. Clements).
The work on Japanese washi paper is in very good general condition.
