Spain - Alfonso XII - 25 Pesetas of gold, struck in 1881 in Madrid. Assayer: MS-M.
8.07 g (fine gold .900) and 24.11 mm in diameter.
Extremely good preservation in high grade, almost uncirculated. Minor surface marks, otherwise virtually mint state and great tonality and lustre.
Sold with its current high-end "suspension" jewellery display case (see pictures).
Obverse: Plain neck bust of King Alfonso XII (1874-1885), right-facing. Legend, in relief:" ALFONSO XII-POR LA G. DE DIOS" and Date" 1881", between two six-pointed star marks (mint marks of the Madrid Royal Mint ) engraved "18" (left) and "81" (in the centre of each star). Portrait signed with the engraver designer initials "G.S." (Gregorio Sellán), at the base of the neck. Rim in relief with a pattern of individual dots.
Reverse: Lesser Royal Coat of Arms of Spain with full Crown and Mantle, encircled by the Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece, and the arms of Castille, Leon, Aragon and Navarre (quarterly) and Granada (enté en point), with an overall, centred Anjou scutcheon with bordure of gules.
Legend, in relief " REY CONSTL-DE ESPAÑA" and Denomination "25 PESETAS" between the Assayer Marks "M.S," and "M." - corresponding to the surname initials of the makers in the Royal Mint (Mauricio Morejón,Pablo Salas and Ángel Mendoza).
Edge: Ornamented, with 27 "fleurs de lis" in relief
