Narcisse Tordoir is a visual artist. Although his oeuvre consist of an arsenal of media -installations, (metal) public artworks, spray paintings, pastels, edited photographic images and drawings - his work mainly looks for a kinship with the art of painting. He is, amongst other, a consultant at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam. Tordoir lives and works in Antwerp.
In the past, Tordoir often worked with wooden panels, with which he made sculptural installations with references to iconography and icons. He has also used screen printing, photography and metal. These days, Tordoirs’ basis often consists of large photographic digital prints that are mounted on panels. He edits these with pastel, paint, spray paint and collages. The photos are taken in his studio.
Tordoir often spends a few years working around a particular theme. Sometimes, this process comes to a conclusion in the form of an exhibition, such as with The Pink Spy: a series of five monumental works, based on etchings by Giambattista Tiepolo. The eponymous exhibition project in the M HKA (2014) consisted of five parts and was put together by Tordoir himself. The exhibition brought together a diverse selection of works. In addition to Tordoirs’ own series, it showed etchings by Tiepolo from the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, and a selection from the M HKA collection with works by, amongst others, Guy Mees and Ann Veronica Janssens. The fifth part covered works by young artists of the State Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam.
