Walter Leblanc evolved after his training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts (1949-1954) and to the national High Institute (1955-1956) in Antwerp in the direction of the monochrome art, the op-art, and kinetic art.
The activities of the Group G58 (1958-1962) in the Antwerp Hessenhuis, of which he was the co-founder, were leading for Leblanc. He came in contact with the international avant-garde, such as the German Zero group (1958-1966), Nul from the Netherlands (1960-1965), and became a member of the international movement Nouvelle Tendance (1961-1968).
In 1959 he introduced the 'torque' as basic element in his work. In the ‘Twisted Strings’ there were twisted cotton threads strained on a monochrome, usually white, surface. Depending on the movement of the spectator and the changing light on the relief, there will be a vibrating, optical effect in the eye of the participant.
