Hans Op de Beeck attended the Higher Institute of Free Arts Sint-Lukas in Brussels. He then obtained a postgraduate degree at the HISK (Antwerp) and the State Academy of Fine Arts (Amsterdam). In 2002-2003, he took part in the MoMA-P. S. 1 Studio Program (New York). Multi-disciplinary visual artist Hans Op de Beeck makes and presents contemporary imaginary urban and interior locations, situations and environments that are familiar to the viewer. This means both silent, deserted places to reflect in, and crowded environments that clarify something about the way we live, which life patterns we follow, and how we deal with time, space and others. Op de Beeck’s visual language is silent and reluctant and refers to the great questions of life. He is sometimes serious and at times ironic; he proposes questions that remain unanswered, without becoming judgemental. The artist sees his work as a way of dealing with the melancholy and the absurdity of human existence. Starting from 2001, when he was the winner of the Young Belgian Painters award, he received widespread fame with his artistic work in the form of large-scale conceived installations. In doing this, he uses various art forms, such as photographic and video-graphic work, elaborate sculptures, stories and animated film with music by Georges Asperghis. Dutch master Johannes Vermeer is his great example, because of his perfectly staged compositions that one experiences as being authentic. The artist states that for the visitor of the present art museum, it is a place for daydreaming, almost a space for reflection, where one can come into himself, a feature that was previously assigned to a church space.
