Luc Peire was a Belgian painter of international fame. Peire attended the Art Academy in Bruges, the HISL in Ghent and the NHISK in Antwerp. His first work was influenced by Constant Permeke. After the Second World War, he evolved toward constructive-abstract art, in which Verticalism played a dominant role. He resided in the Belgian colony of Congo from 1952 to 1955. On his return, his expression had become purely abstract. In 1967, he realised Environnement I, in 1968 Environnement II (Ambiente Mexico 68) and in 1973 Environnement III (for Auckland, New Zealand). To promote Luc Peire’s work, the Association Luc Peire vzw was founded. A very large number of works have been preserved and are on display at the Peire Museum in Knokke.
