Walter Dexel studied from 1910 to 1914 art history with Heinrich Wölfflin and Fritz Burger at the University of Munich.
During the 1920s he was an important representative of Constructivism. In 1921, he came into contact with the Style artist Theo van Doesburg, which resulted in a long lasting friendship. He exhibited regularly in the Berlin Gallery Der Sturm of Herwarth Walden. From 1928 to 1935 he was a lecturer graphic design at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Magdeburg. He was fired when the Nazi’s took over, got a “berufsverbot” and painted no longer. From 1942 to 1955 he collected in Braunschweig the collection of Historical Formensammlung and published several works about design.
After a retrospective exhibition in Berlin in 1961 he regained interest in being an artist and used the in the 1920s developed form for his new work.
