In the 1960s, Panamarenko was active in Antwerp together with Hugo Heyrman and other artists where they organized various happenings, playful street performances in the Centre of Antwerp. These interventions were from 1 June 1968 integrated within the field of action of the free Action Group Antwerp, or simply VAGA of which Panamarenko was a co-founder. The movement originally intended to pursue a policy in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp that was open to contemporary art, but soon also other requirements found support in VAGA, such as pedestrianisation of the square “Conscienceplein”. In August 1968, after only two months, Panamarenko and Heyrman openly stepped away from the group because their project 'Reuzenboom' got no response. This was the end of VAGA.
