Pottery "mingqi" featuring an equestrian model of a male polo player.
Tang dynasty (618-907).
Grey pottery coated with white slip and well preserved red, blue and black pigments.
The horse is modeled in motion at full gallop with four legs raised, the male rider mounted astride, his body twisted to the left, wearing a long sleeved blue robe, a hooded hat and boots. The hands are arranged as if to hold a polo stick.
Leisure-rich aristocrats of the Tang dynasty amused themselves playing sports (in this case polo) and hunting. And such activities were not limited to men but more than often involved the participation of women. This sport originated from Iran with whom China had developed contacts in the 8th century, and came to China through Tibet.
The male polo rider is 47cm high and 43,5cm long. It comes with a custom-made plexiglas stand. Wonderful condition, no damage.
Important note : this male polo rider is one of a PAIR. The second one is a woman polo rider (see picture) and will be proposed to the winning bidder if he wishes so.
This horse comes with a TL certificate from Ralf Kotalla, consistent with the Tang period, in 3 different points. The TL will be transferred to the new owner.
Belgian private collection.
