Very good condition, see description

Original woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada (1786-1865) and Utagawa Hiroshige II (1826-1869) - 'Rokkakudo in Kyoto, Yamashiro Province' form the series "Miracles of Kannon Temples" (Kannon reigenki) - Japan - 1859

Full title: "Rokkakudo in Kyoto, in the Yamashiro Province, No° 18 of the Saikoku Pilgrimage Route" (Saikoku junrei hachiban Yamashiro Kyô Rokkakudô).

From the series "Miracles of Kannon Temples" (Kannon reigenki).
The Miracle (or 'mythical dream') is: The story of Prince Shotoku (Shotoku Taishi).

Signed: "Toyokuni ga", in toshidama cartouche (below) and "Hiroshige ga" (above).
Hiroshige II designed the upper landscape part, Kunisada the scene with text.
Published in 1859, by Yamada Shojiro.
Block-cutter: Yokokawa Takejiro (Hori Take).

With aratame date-seal in the margin, left.

On Japanese washi paper, with an original album-backing, in very good condition, colors bright and vivid.
Size is 24.5x 35.3cm.

In collection MFA-Boston under number 00.1164

In the intriguing "Miracles of Kannon Temples"-series the landscapes in the Hiroshige-tradition are combined with the story-telling of the Kunisada-tradition, both Utagawa-school. An interesting combination of the precision of landscapes and the mythical dreams (also textual), with many details in a fine composition.

In 1844 Kunisada Utagawa (1786- 1865) took the name of his Master/teacher Toyokuni (1769-1825), and he signed his work Toyokuni. He is called Toyokuni III.

Will be sent acid-free protected, under heavy card-boards, fully insured.
