These books were published by the National Gallery of Art, Washington and the Mercatorfonds, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the museum and the 25th anniversary of the publishing house.
Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was an independent South-Dutch baroque painter of the Antwerp School. He was one of the favourite employees of P.P. Rubens and Jacob Jordaens. He lived in Italy and England for some time, working as a portrait painter. He died in London and was buried in the St. Pauls Cathedrale (source: Wikipedia).
