Louis of Pontis (1583-1670) was a French marshal. At the age of sixteen, he took up a military career and served in the armies of the king during 56 years. He had just been appointed Marshal when, following a stroke of bad luck and the death of a close relation, he retired with the Jansenists at Port-Royal des Champs where he spent the rest of his life. His memoirs, first published in 1676, relate several military facts under Louis XIII and Louis XIV with style and liveliness, and depict cardinal Richelieu with blackness.
