RUSSIAN hand-knotted carpet from the region located north and to the west of Lake Sevan, in the southwestern part of the Caucasus. These carpets were originally named after Kazakh (Azerbaijan) city, where they were made until around 1925. They are the most renowned and valued among Caucasian carpets. They are characterised, among other details, for having a long pile and by the fact that they sometimes have up to eight weft threads between their rows of knots. These carpets of relatively spaced knots have high quality velvet wool , which makes them very strong.
