Jan Frederik van Beeck Calkoen (Groningen, 5 May 1772-Utrecht, 25 March 1811) was a Dutch mathematician and astronomer, and Professor at the University of Leiden.
Valdez Calkoen was planning to dedicate himself to the theology, but he started to get interested in mathematics and astronomy, which he found a teacher in Johann Friedrich Hennert. He continued studying at the University of Groningen and obtained his doctorate there in may 1797 in philosophy and mathematics and physics on the dissertation De horologiis veterum sciothericis. In order to increase his knowledge of astronomy he undertook a trip to Germany, and he visited Leipzig, Göttingen, Jena and Gotha
n 1799 Van Beeck was appointed extraordinary Professor in Leiden and five years later to full professor there. He was also promoted to master of liberal arts and teacher of philosophy. In 1799 he held, on the occasion of his appointment as extraordinary Professor, the speech The rationis ad Naturam conformatae elegantia Mathematicae atque utilitate and on the occasion of his appointment as Professor of the lecture The novissimis in Inventis Astronomia. In 1805, he was appointed extraordinary Professor at the University of Utrecht, where he was the successor of his master Hennert. He held the inaugural address The Studii saeculo XVIII incrementis Astronomici, which later appeared in print.
