Alfred Stieglitz est un photographe, galeriste et un marchand d'art américain, pionnier de la photographie.

Il fut l'une des premières personnalités à élever la photographie au rang d'œuvre d'art, organisant des expositions et lançant des revues uniquement sur ce médium. Sa vie fut un combat pour que l'art photographique soit reconnu comme un art fondamental alors qu'au XIXe siècle, la photographie avait surtout un intérêt scientifique, documentaire et non artistique. Il acquiert une renommée internationale en organisant, en 1902, au National Arts Club de New York, une impressionnante exposition de photographies à laquelle participent les photographes du groupe Photo-Sécession. Ses oeuvres font l'objet,en 1923,de la toute première exposition de photographies dans un musée et sa donation au Metropolitan Museum de New York en 1924 de 27 clichés est la toute première donation de photos au monde.
